About Removing Metadata (This Tool)

This page helps you safely remove sensitive metadata from images and PDFs. Use it to strip GPS coordinates, dates, device identifiers, author details, editor traces, and more—directly in your browser. Export cleaned files to protect privacy before sharing.

Supported Formats & What We Can Remove

  • JPEG/JPG: EXIF, IPTC, XMP, thumbnails, GPS, dates, identifiers.
  • PNG: tEXt/iTXt chunks, XMP, ancillary metadata where present.
  • GIF: Comment blocks and common metadata headers.
  • TIFF: EXIF, IPTC, XMP, common private tags.
  • PDF: Info dictionary fields (Title/Author/Keywords/etc.), XMP packets.

Note: Some apps re-embed metadata on export. Always verify the final file if you reprocess it elsewhere.

How to Use the Metadata Remover

  1. Upload one or more files (use Single or Bulk remove modes).
  2. Select a preset: Strip GPS, Strip Dates, Strip Identifiers, Strip All, or Custom.
  3. Optionally preview Before/After and fine-tune fields in Custom Selection.
  4. Click Download Stripped Image (or bulk export) to save cleaned files.

Tip: Use Custom Selection for compliance workflows where specific fields must be retained.

Safety, Quality & Limitations

  • Browser-based: Processing happens locally in your browser; files aren’t uploaded to our servers.
  • Image quality: Where possible we avoid recompression; in some formats, rewriting may change file size or encoding.
  • Embedded previews: JPEG thumbnails and previews can contain metadata or visual remnants; presets remove common previews.
  • Editor traces: XMP history from editors (e.g., Photoshop/Lightroom) can be removed with Strip All or via Custom.
  • PDF content: We remove document info/XMP; content inside the pages (text annotations, attachments) isn’t altered.

Troubleshooting

  • File won’t download: Allow downloads/pop-ups in your browser settings.
  • Still see metadata: Some viewers cache info; reopen the cleaned file, or verify in the View Metadata page.
  • Large files: Very large images/PDFs may take time; wait for the progress indicator to complete.
  • Color profiles: Strip All may remove ICC profiles; use Custom to retain them.
  • App re-adding metadata: If you re-export in another app, it may reinsert fields—run the remover again.
